Lawn Re-Imagining Project Community Inquiry
Hello EDC community,
This is David Guzman, one of the awardees of the EDC project grant.
My project is centered around the toxicity of the suburban lawn, and aims to connect passive/curious lawn owners with gardeners and eco-artist-steward folk to reimagine 1 square meter of their lawn through an ecological restorative lens.
Originally I was inspired by Ellie Iron’s lawn sculptures that allow fauna to grow unencumbered, the slow transformation that can be witnessed when you un-lawn a portion of a lawn, (and do nothing), and the way a physical sculpture can be an eco-remediator in disguise.
At the same time, I’m very passionate about direct gardening methods, and the beautiful, tasty and diverse possibilities that growing and encouraging natives can bring.
I’m hoping that 4-5 lawn-owner + eco-artist-steward collaborations would yield personal, intimate manifestations of a reimagined lawn. The project would culminate in a block-party sharing of these re-imagined lawns.
And so, my question to the community:
Are there any gardeners, artists or designers who might weigh in on the methodology? Anyone with experience in lawn re-imagining?
Further, are there people who would like to participate in some way; either by reclaiming a small portion of their own lawn, offering meadow-making and gardening expertise, creating some lawn art, or otherwise?
