Jane Jacobs Walk: Eyes on Patterson Park

May 17 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm EDT

Free

Jane Jacobs used the idea of “eyes on the street” to describe how vibrant, safe public spaces depend on people being present, observant, and engaged in everyday life. It wasn’t about surveillance or policing—it was about natural, informal watchfulness created by neighbors, pedestrians, and regular users of a place.
“Eyes on the Park” builds on that idea. In the context of Patterson Park, it refers to the many ways people contribute to a space simply by being there—walking, sitting, playing, gardening, or volunteering. These everyday activities create a sense of safety, belonging, and shared responsibility. The more “eyes” a park has, the more it becomes a lived-in, cared-for, and welcoming place.
