Call for UX and Website Designer: Ecological Design Collective Website Redesign

The Ecological Design Collective is looking to hire a UX designer from within our community to help us redesign and improve our website. We are seeking someone who can help us make the site more functional, intuitive, accessible, and visually compelling, while reflecting the values and collaborative energy of the EDC.

We envision the website redesign as an opportunity to make the EDC’s online presence feel more aligned with the values of the platform itself: DIY, community-based, experimental, and built through open-source digital technologies. Rather than smoothing over the site’s patchwork origins, the redesign should foreground them as part of its identity. What might appear as “bugs” from the perspective of a corporate website can become features here, showing how the platform has grown through communities of mutual interest rather than being engineered as a seamless, market-expanding enterprise.

Aesthetically, we are imagining a retro-futurist solarpunk archive style. The redesign might draw on retro-futurist ecological web design, analog solarpunk publishing, zine-like annotations, technical manuals, archival interfaces, and low-tech digital experimentation. The goal is not to make the website feel slick or frictionless, but to make it feel DIY and collectively assembled, emphasizing openness and repairability, and making visible the infrastructures, relationships, and shared interests from which the project has grown.

This project will focus on improving both the user experience and the overall aesthetics of the website. We are especially interested in working with someone who understands or is excited by ecological design, community-based knowledge, public scholarship, and collaborative practice.
